Call For Case Studies

Centre for Education in the Built Environment Special Interest Group 2009/10

Intercultural Interactions

Call for Case Studies

Following the desire voiced at the SCHOSA conference last April to further investigate the challenges and potential of a wider engagement in architectural education, the Centre for Education in the Built Environment (CEBE) has made funding available to set up a Special Interest Group (SIG).

The theme of the SIG is "Intercultural Interactions", looking at the relationship between schools of architecture and the constituencies they are linked to and embedded in on a national and international level. This will include investigating how schools build upon their engagement with various groups outside as well as within the institutions themselves, and how they and their students can benefit from and benefit others through an active engagement with different cultures.

The Special Interest Group is subdivided into three subject strands:

ASD Projects, the architectural projects office based at the Department of Architecture and Spatial Design of London Metropolitan University, will be coordinating the SIG.

As SIG we are keen for all issues explored to be transferable to the reality of architectural education in the United Kingdom, while we highly encourage contribution from international partners.

We would be delighted if you were to join the SIG, as we would be very interested in including your work in this field as a case study. Should you be interested, Stefanie Rhodes of ASD Projects would get in touch with you shortly with more information and a detailed call for proposals.

The outcomes for the Special Interest Group, which will be running from September 2009 until the summer of 2010, will be a publication (available online and ideally in print), a series of workshops exploring the individual subject strands and the presentation of the case studies on the first day of the SCHOSA conference 2010. It also includes wider aims such as the exchange of examples of good practice and experience. The Architect's Journal has registered interest in partnering, which could include coverage of the case studies and/or of the SCHOSA conference.

If you have any further questions, or know of a school of architecture or individual working on relevant themes, who may be interested in joining and contributing to the SIG, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Stefanie Rhodes under office.asdprojects@gmail.com or  (0)207 133 4485.
